  • Excerpt: Initially the tequila feels soft and lightly sweet on the palate, but it soon becomes a little dry with the oak flavors coming through. There's a peppery bite and warm barrel spices coming through.

Raided Score is a conversion from an external site's score, to our in house uniform scoring system. Please see the FAQ for more.

  • Intro:

Patron's second entry into its smoked Ahumado tequila lineup and third overall attempt at the concept since launching Gran Patron Smoky in 2018. Lets see how roasted agave stands up to six months of barrel aging.

  • Nose:

The nose is more muted than the Blanco - a touch of oak added, yet lots of fruit taken away. Same smokey note is there, though it still leans on the “clean” side of the spectrum rather than a pungent, chemical smoke.

  • Taste:

Chalky, but apples and pears remain though that lovely tropical note is gone, replaced by cedar, light oak, bitterness. Lightly sweet.

  • Finish:

Moderate finish, full of wood sugars, smoke. Hint of pear, but that’s it.

  • Overall:

I don’t think the additional tannin here with the introduction of the barrel aging is really helping these, where the vibrant agave notes of the Blanco worked well with the smoking. It’s not bad, but it’s not great either.

  • Score:

    4
