Distilled by Rosario Angeles Vasquez, daughter in law to the great Berta Vasquez (shes great in my mind at least), this Arroqueno is produced in Saint Catarina Minas using a clay still and river water. I'm a lover of all things Vasquez and Arroqueno so this was a no brainer purchase in my book.
Wowzers - so much happening on the nose. The clay is unmistakable - funky, cheesy, garlic forward. Lactic, musty, a bit of brine and savory character. Hint of cream cheese frosting, a bit of sour cream, lime, orange zest, bit of pepper.
Powerful savory palate - cream, cheese, clay, a bit of ash and some musty sweetness. Lots of pepper, bit moe orange peel. Fuuuuuuuunky.
Long finish, peppery, ashy, loaded with those clay post notes, arroqueno lends a fruity sweetness and a blast of almost beef jerky notes.
This is all over the place - in a good way. Powerful, musty, funky, savory, smoky. Lovely.
