Koch El Espadin

  • Distiller:

    Pedro Hernandez

  • Bottler:

    Koch Mezcal

  • ABV:

    47%

  • Age:

    NA

  • Price:
    $$$$$
  • Raided Score: 88
  • Publication: Distiller
  • Excerpt: This espadín has a good amount of smoke, but does not overwhelm and has just enough sweetness on the front and mid-palate, but finishes fairly dry. A great mezcal that can seamlessly transition from being mixed in cocktails to being sipped neat or on the rocks.

  • Intro:

This is an artesenal Mezcal distilled by Pedro Hernandez in the San Baltazar Guelavila village. This is batch 01/19 - let's see how it is.

  • Nose:

Sweet, fruity, corn forward. Confectioners sugar, mild clay, some dirty and pepper.

  • Taste:

Thin on the palate - not a ton going on, but it's pleasant. Melon, pepper, faint smoke. ABV feels about right.

  • Finish:

Short to medium in length - sweet, some charcoal and some burning wood. The smoke isn't agressive, and wisps away cleanly.

  • Overall:

Overall I like this - it far exceeded my expectations for a bottling so inexpensive.

  • Score:

    5
