    El SIlencio

  • ABV:

    43%

  • Age:

    NAS

  • Price:
    $$$$$
  • Raided Score: 87

  • Excerpt: The palate is much like the aroma with no discernable fruit and little sweetness. If you fear the funk, best to use this mezcal in cocktails rather than for sipping, but if that is something you can embrace, by all means, sip away.

  • Intro:

Distilled by Pedro Hernandez for El Silencio in San Baltazar Guelavila, this espadin is made in small batches and is aimed for the high end cocktail market. To me, that sounds like "don't drink neat" so let's drink this neat and see how much I regret it.

  • Nose:

Cream cheese frosting, toasted almond, apple and mango. Not super bold.

  • Taste:

Leather, faint sweetness. Faint smoke. Pretty weak palate overall. Not a lot going on. Hint of kiwi fruit.

  • Finish:

Short, light ash, faint clay. Again, not a ton going on.

  • Overall:

Not bad, but incredibly bland. I'm honestly a little surprised, and a hair impressed. That said, I can't imagine this makes amazing cocktails, since it doesn't have much character. Maybe that's the point. Who knows.
