This is an older batch of Tobala from Del Maguey - the first batch of 2014. Discovered hiding out on a local shelf, I picked it up and am drinking it for you today. It’s made in the mountains, as we’re told, and double distilled. Let’s get to drinking.
Fresh orange, citrus, faint latex paint. Sweet honey, bright fruit and a bright roasted agave note.
Bright and sweet on the palate, a big grassy note greets first. Confectioners sugar, pepper, a faint woody ash. Bright orange, mango, lemon zest. Cream cheese sweetness. Back palate has a bit of wood smoke.
Long finish. Bright and fruity, with the addition of some clay, slate and burning wood smoke. Almost a hickory note.
Overall, quite a nice Tobala. The complexity and combination of the fruits and the ashy component work well together, bringing plenty of flavor.
